    Tying the story to data

December 6, 2011 Abstracting craft, Conversations, gesture, graffiti, interviews, LGRU, Networked graphics, standards, Tools, writing

In the summer of 2010, Constant commissioned artist and researcher Evan Roth to develop a work of his choice, and to make the development process available in some way. He decided to use a part of his fee as prize-money for The GML-Recorder Challenge, inviting makers to propose an open source device ‘that can unobtrusively record graffiti motion data during a graffiti writer’s normal practice in the city’.

In three interviews that took place in Brussels and Paris within a period of one and a half years, we spoke about the collaborative powers of the GML-standard, about contact points between hacker and graffiti-cultures and the granularity of gesture.

The text is based on conversations between Evan Roth (ER) and Femke Snelting (FS), Peter Westenberg (PW), Michele Walther (MW), Stéphanie Villayphiou (SV), John Haltiwanger (JH) and momo3010.

    • WhatsApp alternatives 31.10.2025
In many situations, instant messaging services are very useful. Many groups recognise this and use them extensively. If someone doesn't reply, a short message — on the same platform — ensures that important communication is not forgotten. How convenient! Not to mention that group messages and individual communications are all in the same application. But […]

Join us for another Confusing coding club where we introduce slow-simmered Cantonese herbal soup traditions through a shared commitment to speculative, intersectional, and embodied technologies of care. In this hands-on session, soup-making becomes both a medium and a method, which is a living technology that carries kinship, memory, metabolic and cultural knowledge. We will engage […]
